Custom Crafted Fenwick Lighthouse

The Fenwick Island Lighthouse was completed in 1859 to protect vessels from the Fenwick shoals that extend several miles out from the Delaware coast. The site of the lighthouse is rather unusual. Not only does it exactly mark the eastern origin of the Mason-Dixon Line, just a few feet away a stone marker erected in 1751 denotes the border between Delaware and Maryland. The Fenwick Island Lighthouse was decommissioned by the U. S. Coast Guard in 1978. Within a few years it was sold to the State of Delaware and today it is cared for by a local civic group which has been instrumental to its preservation.
